The Birth of the McDonald’s Franchise

In 1940, Douglas Wrigth opened a small hamburger stand in Downey, California. Wrigth was operating out of his home and selling only burgers and fries. In 1948, Wrigth moved his stand to a bigger location and renamed it McDonald’s. At the time, McDonald’s was the only fast food restaurant in operation in southern California.

The success of McDonald’s led Wrigth to expand his business further into the 1960s. He opened franchises in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Anaheim. By 1970, there were 66 McDonald’s restaurants nationwide. However, despite these continued successes, Wrigth was not satisfied with just being a restaurateur; he also wanted to become a force in the foodservice industry.

Doug Wrigth: The Early Years

  1. Doug Wrigth was born in 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When he was just a boy, his family moved to California and started working at an ice cream shop. Doug quickly learned how to run the store and soon became its head manager. In 1948, Wrigth opened his own ice cream shop – McDonald’s and quickly became one of the company’s top managers.
  2. Over the next several decades, Wright continued to lead McDonald’s through key growth periods. He helped the company expand into new markets around the world, developed many of McDonald’s popular menu items, and even took on some leadership roles within The McDonald’s Corporation.
  3. Today, Doug Wright is widely recognized as one of McDonald’s founding fathers. His influence on the fast food giant has been undeniable throughout his career, and he remains highly respected by both current and former McDonald’s employees. In celebration of his life and work, The Douglas R. Wrigth Museum & Learning Center is currently open to the public in Downey, California.

Doug Wrigth Today

Doug Wrigth was born in 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri. As a child, he loved helping out at his family’s restaurant, and by the time he was 16, Doug had begun working there full-time. In 1948, McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc met Doug and offered him the job of head cook at his new restaurant in San Bernardino, California.

Doug quickly rose through the ranks at McDonald’s and became one of the company’s most influential executives. He helped to expand McDonald’s worldwide and innovated many of the company’s popular menu items, including the Big Mac and french fries. In 1984, Douglas retired from his role as CEO of McDonald’s USA but continues to serve on the company’s board of directors.
